Perhaps the most colorful of our native flowers, appearing in early April, the bright lavender blooms are about 1" across and have little or no scent. The berries are salmon colored (pastel orange), although may turn reddish or even dark red under the right conditions. The berries are edible, being slightly sour but otherwise having little taste. The stems have thorns, but are less problematic than those of roses or Himalayan blackberries. If given room, these can slowly spread to form thickets.
